We are based at Saint Jean de Losne which lies at the heart of the french waterways and canal system in southern Burgundy. 

From here we manage our boat marina, or used barge and canal boat brokerage, our chandlery shop, and our workshops. 

We have been in the business for 25 years now and we like to think that we can help you to get everything done concerning your canal boat.

We undertake the sale or purchase of boats and barges, the mooring,the paperwork and registration, the insurance, and any job be it from an oil change to a complete barge conversion. It takes a brave buyer to buy a boat from a private individual moored in the middle of nowhere and with no access to the above.

France is crossed by a network of canals essentially built in the 19th century but with some as old as the 17th. 

These link up to the main rivers which have also been made navigable (in some cases since the Roman invasion nearly 2000 years ago). 

The purpose of these canals was of course the transport of merchandise by barge, although this is nearly extinct. The greater part of the canal construction was supervised by the politician and engineer Charles de Freycinet. He set the standard size of the canals throughout France. 

He determined the dimensions of the locks at 38 meters long and 5.1 meters wide, the bridge height at 3.4 meters, and the canal depth allowing passage of boats of 1.8 meters deep. 
The locks were of course built to enable the canals to cross the hills which separate the various river basins, and their frequency depends on the gradient to be climbed. These days they have retained their original aspect, usually with a lock-keepers cottage alongside, and they represent a chance to stop and chat with the lockkeeper, admire their gardens, or buy some of their wine, cheese, vegetables, fruit or other produce that they sell to passing barge traffic. 

The canal barges were also originally horse drawn and to protect the horses from the heat of the sun the canals were lined with poplar trees. 
You still find these trees along the canals. The tow paths are generally in good condition throughout the canal network and make excellent tracks for cycling, walking, or the morning jog.

Speed is limited to 3 m.p.h. on the canals and 10 m.p.h. on the rivers, not counting the 10 minutes or so necessary to pass through a lock. It is definitely not possible to be in a hurry. 
The speed and sensations are comparable to walking and one has time to admire the flowers, or exchange a greeting with passers by on the canal bank. You can also usually HEAR the cows and the birds as the boat's engine is not working hard and is rumbling away aft.

Il est très difficile de vendre un bateau, et surtout à un étranger, si vous ne pouvez pas lui assurer la tranquilité sur tous ces points.

France et Freycinet 
La France est sillonnée par un réseau de canaux construits pour la plupart au 19ème siècle, mais certains d'entre eux remontent au 17ème siècle. Ces canaux relient entre eux des rivières navigables. 

A l'origine, ces canaux étaient bien sûr destinés au transport des marchandises, actuellement en déclin. La plupart de ces constructions ont été réalisées aux normes "Freycinet", c'est-à-dire, 38 mètres de long et 5.10 mètres de large pour les péniches, la hauteur des ponts à 3.40 mètres, et le tirant d'eau pour les bateaux à 1.80 mètres. 

Les Ecluses : Les écluses, permettent au canal, de gravir et descendre les dénivelés de terrain. Plus le relief est accidenté, plus il y a d'écluses. Ces écluses ont gardé pour la plupart leur aspect d'origine, avec leur maison d'éclusier. 

Elles sont souvent l'occasion pour les navigateurs d'échanger quelques mots avec l'éclusier, et d'acheter quelques produits "maison" tels que miel, légumes du jardin, oeufs, volailles, et dans les régions de vignes, quelques bouteilles de la production régionale.

Les chemins de halage : Les péniches étaient à l'origine tirées par des chevaux, et pour protéger mariniers et chevaux du soleil, les canaux étaient bordés d'arbres, peupliers ou platanes. 

Ces chemins de halage sont des sentiers où il fait bon marcher, se promener ou rouler à vélo.

La Vie au ralenti..... 
La vitesse est limitée à 5km/heure sur les canaux et 15 km/heure sur les rivières, ce qui, avec le temps de passage des écluses, rend impossible toute idée de précipitation. 

La navigation fluviale est un loisir de promenade et de découverte tranquille des paysages et de leurs habitants.

La Belgique et la Hollande 
La Belgique, est, de même que le France, parcourue des voies navigables pour le plupart au gabarit "Freycinet". 

Wir verkaufen Motorkreuzer (für das offene Meer, sowie natürlich für Flüsse und Kanäle) und umgebaute Lastschiffe von 12 bis 40 Metern länge.

Frankreich 
Frankreich ist durchzogen von einem Geflecht aus für die Navigation angelegten Flussläufen und Kanälen. Diese wurden einst konzipiert, um Verbindungen zwischen den schiffbaren Flusswegen zu schaffen. Sie wurden größtenteils im neunzehnten Jahrhundert angelegt, einige wenige stammen sogar noch aus dem siebzehnten Jahrhundert. Damals waren sie für die Frachtschiff - Händler bestimmt, die darauf ihre Waren transportierten. Der Schiffstransport existiert zwar noch, ist aber auf einen Bruchteil seiner ehemaligen Stärke geschrumpft.

Freycinet 
Der Grossteil der Kanäle wurde entsprechend den Maßen der „Freycinet" konstruiert, das heißt, ihre Breite musste wenigstens 5,10 Meter, die Länge 40 Meter betragen und die Wassertiefe wurde auf 1,80 Meter festgelegt. 

Die Brücken mussten 3,50 Meter hoch sein, um die Frachtschiffe unter sich hindurch zu lassen. Mittels Schleusen wurde es möglich, die Höhe des Wasserspiegels an die Umgebung anzupassen. 

Promenaden 
Heutzutage sind diese Schleusen mit ihren Wärterhäuschen hauptsächlich aufgrund ihrer Ursprünglichkeit bewahrt. Sie bieten beliebte Anlaufstellen für die Flussfahrer, um einen Plausch mit dem Schleusenwärter zu halten oder vielleicht einige regionale Leckereien zu erstehen, wie beispielsweise Honig, Gartenfrüchte, Eier, Geflügel und natürlich, in Regionen mit Weinanbau, ein paar Flaschen des lokalen Weines. 

Zu Beginn des Wassertransportes wurden die Frachtkähne einmal von Pferden gezogen. Um Tiere und Besatzung vor der Sonneneinstrahlung zu schützen, säumte man die Kanäle mit Bäumen, vorrangig mit Schatten spendenden Pappeln oder Platanen. Dadurch entstanden an den Ufern der Kanäle schöne Promenaden, wo es sich gut wandern, spazieren oder Rad fahren lässt.

Die Geschwindigkeit..... 
Die Geschwindigkeit auf den Kanälen ist auf fünf Stundenkilometer und auf den Flüssen auf fünfzehn Stundenkilometer beschränkt, was in Kombination mit der Dauer, die das Passieren der Schleusen für sich beansprucht, jeglichen Anflug von Hast und Eile unmöglich macht.
